About
The Dictionary of Medicines and Devices (dm+d) is the national NHS standard for medicine and device terminology. It’s used across all sectors of healthcare, from prescribing in general practice to electronic prescribing and medicines administration (EPMA) in hospitals. dm+d provides a consistent, structured way of identifying and coding medicines, supporting patient safety, system interoperability, and the development of digital healthcare tools. This Learning Program introduces you to the structure, purpose, and real-world use of dm+d within digital health environments. Whether you’re a digital or EPMA pharmacist, clinical informatics colleague, or a healthcare professional with an interest in digital transformation, this course will build your confidence in understanding and applying dm+d in your work. We’ll cover the key components of dm+d (such as VTMs, VMPs, AMPs, and AMPPs), how they relate to SNOMED CT, and explore how dm+d data is used in practice, from prescribing to interoperability and decision support. Case studies and practical examples will show how dm+d supports safe and effective medicines use across digital systems. By the end of this course, you’ll be able to: - Describe what dm+d is and why it matters - Understand the structure of dm+d and key terms - Apply this knowledge in real-world digital pharmacy settings - Confidently navigate dm+d resources and tools This course is an essential foundation for those working in, or entering, digital pharmacy, EPMA, or clinical informatics roles.
